Welcome to Fleur d' Orléans

In celebration of the design heritage of New Orleans Jann Fenner and Thomas Laird have designed a unique collection of silver jewelry. We literally find our designs on the streets of New Orleans: murals in old churches, cast iron in the French Quarter, facades downtown. The city inspires us, so you can take a piece of New Orleans home with you. Nothing is mass-produced. Our original designs, inspired by New Orleans, are created by master craftspeople just for you.

As you can read on the page About fleur de lys we are obsessed with fleur d’ lys, how it became a symbol of New Orleans and its long history. We estimate that there are about 75 different fleur d’ lys in our collection, and their number is growing monthly. When we first moved to New Orleans, we found ourselves taking photographs of architectural details. Soon we were obsessed with the design heritage of New Orleans, not just fleur d’ lys, but other beaux arts decorative motifs we found all over the city. There is a story here…We learned to love New Orleans by spending 30 years in Asia!

Laird is a journalist and photographer who lived in Asia from 1971 to 2003—working for magazines like Time, Newsweek and National Geographic. He is the author of two books and photographer of two others: can find them all on Amazon.com.

Fenner moved to Nepal just after she met Laird. In a previous life, she managed exclusive spas in California but gave all that up to move to Kathmandu. Working together in Asia, we created magazine stories about craftspeople in Asia, and made friends with weavers, silversmiths, and others. Slowly we began to develop new products, with crafts people in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Thailand, Laos and Bali. After a trip to New Orleans in 2000, we began to work with our friends in Asia to manufacture designs inspired by New Orleans.

Thus Fleur d' Orléans was born. Our first shop opened in Riverwalk Mall in 2004 and was destroyed in the aftermath of Katrina, ten months later. In September 2005 (yes, weeks after Katrina) we opened a second outlet, at center court of the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. We were given such a warm welcome! Somehow the storm made everyone more aware of the treasures of New Orleans. We were amongst the first back to New Orleans, re-opening in Riverwalk in February of 2006. In May 2006, we opened our flagship shop on Magazine Street, while keeping the venues in Riverwalk and Mall of Louisiana open. We expanded rapidly after Katrina—before the storm, we had just one store, now we have three. We could not have done it without the warm support from New Orleanians, and visitors. Thank you!

We work with the finest craftspeople in Asia, to produce unique treasures—in silver, silk, leaded crystal, hand made paper, gold leaf and carved wood—that celebrate the design heritage of New Orleans. Your will find our products only here on our web site, in our three shops, and with a few Mardi Gras Krewes for whom we design custom pieces.

Since we work with old friends in Democratic-Asia to produce our jewelry and other unique gift items, we insure that none of our products are produced in ways that harm the environment, or the craftspeople who produce them. In many cases its craftswomen who produce our designs for us, and are thus able to support their families with their traditional crafts. We like to think that this form of globalization helps to preserve the traditional crafts in the countries where we manufacture.
